CLIENT NAME: Inns of Courts College of Advocacy

ICCA provides training in education, guidance and leadership for barristers, judges and other legal professional services. They develop expansive e-learning course for professionals studying civil and criminal topics. I worked with them for a good chunk of 2019 and right into the middle of 2020, developing illustration and motion graphics. They were a really good crowd to work with.

THE CHALLENGE: Offering an affordable and flexible model to studying for the Bar through their online learning platform and face-to-face delivery, their main function is to provide education, leadership and guidance practising Bar, pertaining to Civil and Criminal litigation, Advocacy, Legal Research and professional ethics. Every year about 3000 successful Bar graduates compete for about 450 pupilages. With so a few places available, its vital that students of the course get as much value as they can to increase their chances of success. The team were looking to develop an expansive and engaging e-learning course for legal professionals studying a multitude of civil and criminal topics like ‘Types of Arrest’ or ‘Client/Attorney Privilege’.

THE SOLUTION: Real life cases are used throughout the modules as training examples for the students. That being said, not every case is full of exciting reading material. To make sure engagement was as high as possible, I decided to use a comic-book/graphic novel style approach to deliver the content. Working with their SME’s from both Criminal and Civil departments, I developed a consistent illustration style and accompanying explainer animations to be used throughout the course.

MY ROLE: Having worked a long time within the e-learning industry, I’m keenly aware of the reputation it has. Although it’s changing, many organisations have been guilty for one reason or another of falling into the scenario of producing content that’s overly-reliant on stock assets, which leaves them looking generic. Having just finished a role in e-learning, I thought there was an opportunity to lift the level of aesthetic and change it from icon based to more scenario based, depending on the story of the court case. I was responsible for all new illustrations and more cinematic style animations for use in the Criminal and Civil departments e-learning modules.
